This just makes me mad, and sad, and so frustrated. thank you, I told you I need you to get me thinking.

Thanks so much for posting this. I put it up on my blog too. It's not abnormal that when I say something about race in America that people say "are people still really like that (racist, fearful, stereotyping)?" The average white person on the street needs to read an article like that. If we're not aware of the problem, how can we contribute to the change? Great article. Sad reality, but good article.

This is really sad, scary, and infuriating. As I read that article I could think of several Black men I know that are always smiling, dress very nicely, are super polite, and are well liked by all the white folks they work with. Clearly they are good at these survival skills. But with so many Black men struggling that is simply not enough. I am interested in that book mentioned. I wonder if it's possible to find a copy? One thing it strengthens my resolve to seek and find more strong Black male role models for my son.

I'm not sure how I missed this article on your blog. Wow, it brings to light a lot of things we don't talk about. I guess that's what made it so hard to read, nobody in this day and age should have to be worried about the kinds of things discussed in the article.

The skin tone issue has been going on for centuries since slavery. There is an old saying that goes like this "If you're black get back, it you're brown stick around, and if you're white, you're alright."

I disagree with one part of the article though, "Black mothers and fathers socialize their sons to not make waves, to not come up against the authorities, to speak even more politely not only when there are whites present but particularly if there are whites who have power,". For us we teach Dakota to respect those that respect him, and always stand up for himself. I think because of this, he is not shy and tends to talk to just about anyone.

Very interesting article - thanks for sharing!
