Vacuum Cleaners?
Um, I'm still officially taking a blogging break, but I have a question for you!
We have some new carpet now, so the flooring is about 1/3 tile and 2/3 carpeting. Currently we have a used (possibly refirbished, but probably just used) Hoover vacuum that we bought for $89 over eight years ago. We literally threw it in the moving truck on our way out of town, driving to our first home in Washington. It's heavy and awkward and old, doesn't work well on the tile, and we can't find the right bags for it any more.
We need a new vacuum cleaner.
I've looked at online reviews and they're kind of confusing. Some say Dysons are the best (the BEST! and ONLY! vacuum you should own!), but others say you can get just as good a vacuum for less money.
So... what do you use? Do you have a great or horrible vacuum cleaner? What do you think of buying refirbished vacuums? Any advice for me?
Quick, the dust is being ground into the carpet as we speak!
I don't have much advice for you as I'm looking for a new one myself (for hardwood). I WAS going to get a Dyson when I had carpet & cats because I've heard they will suck up loads of stuff other vacuums leave behind.

DYSON DYSON DYSON DYSON DYSON DYSON.
We have two cats, a dog, and foster dogs in a tiny house and that Dyson picks up every damned thing. It's suction is so strong that we have to actually haul it across the carpet because it sucks itself to the floor.
To give you an idea: We steam cleaned the entire house when we moved in. We vacuum almost every day. When we got the Dyson we vacuumed the house and filled the canister THREE TIMES. That's like, a metric ton of dust and hair and crap that our previous "good" cleans had not gotten out of the carpet.
Borrow one if you can, to try it out. They are worth every dime. Every penny.
Go with the Dyson. I have never before wanted to make out with a vacuum cleaner, but I have a total appliance crush.

I like Dyson, or The Oreck- the Orek is nice because it is really light, and hauling it upstairs is no big deal:)

I do not have a Dyson, but bagless and no filters, isn't that right? They have to be the best, I do no people who have bought those refurbished at half the price.
I just have a regular bagless, cheap thing, but it is great for me. I don't even know what kind it is. Bagless is key I think. and I can wash my filters so that helps.
I did borrow a Dyson one time, but I don't remember it being that much of a difference. I don't have pets though. (oh right and I am cheap, and my husband is cheaper)
although if I needed a new one and could get a Dyson, I am sure I would.

I have just a regular bagless Hoover, maybe an 80-90 one, and love it! I think bagless is key because you can empty it each time. It's amazing how much stuff comes up off the floor!!

I have an Oreck and absolutely love it! I'm a small person so lugging around those huge plastic vacuums wasn't working for me. It cleans really well too. I have allergies and I can tell the difference after I vacuum using my Oreck.

I have a Dyson and I LOVE it! They are the best vacuums on the market. I did the "test" when we got the new one. First I swept the floor with the old vacuum, then went over the same place with my Dyson, I was SHOCKED as to how much extra crap came up with they Dyson. It actaully made me a little ashamed.

I have a hoover windtunnel and I love it. I've also used a dyson animal (supposed to be super great at getting pet hair up) but I think the windtunnel is much better!

okay this is a really old post but I clean as my self-employed business for the past 12 years.
I have used probably over 100 vacumms in the past 12 years and these are my comments on them...
Oreck: lightweight but is not a good vacuum long term
Dyson: Works very well but they are heavy so if you have separate floors get two! LOL
Panansonic upright: probably the cheapest and very best all around vacuum I've ever used.
Mieli: cost a fortune but works awesome/some one is actually willing me one when they die...
Electrolux canister..:Awesome all around good vacumm
Hoover upright w/ bags or with out:
They will pick up rock salt and foam ear plugs off of muddy carpeting (dont ask)
